Blow stuff up...? I'll make a point of not pressing any large menacing red buttons then shall I? ;)

Excellent! Croeso Will...:-) And if you click on 'Edit' just above the page title (next to 'View') you can add your name to the list on the page itself...:-)

We certainly don't want to be at all exclusive, but I just wonder if it is wise for us to keep on adding everyone as editors. The potential for mishaps (or even dare I say it, even mischief) increases with the number of folk who have a delete button. I think it would be safer to enrol most people as writers in future, with just a limited number of regulars as editors. Most of the time people will only need to add. and I doubt whether it will often be a problem if they can't delete. It's similar to only having a limited number of moderators on a forum.
What do others think?

What Daf says makes some sense. Remember that the original map disappeared in large part due to the fact that someone who was not really familiar with the system clicked the wrong box and deleted it. Wouldn't want anything like that to happen here!!!

Yup, fair call. Writers is the default setting, so it will save me a little time too...:-)

hi Ruby "Waves back" I think Daf' has a good point...while the number are low and the site is new things go well...but over time and an increase in numbers who knows what can happen. Perhaps channelling ideas through a committee of some sort?

A committee?? Oops, that sounds a bit formal to me. Who's going to take the minutes? I think the essence of a wiki is that it evolves in the hands of the users. We all pitch in. Survival of the fittest maybe? More evolution than creation anyway. Somewhat surprisingly it seems to work. With a friendly community like SSIW it should work really well.

so which one???

Perhaps we can have it both ways... is there some way that we can back up the Wiki to a day before such a catastrophic event would or could take place either deliberately or by accident???

We have a handful of editors for now, and going forwards I'll settle for the default for new contributes, which is 'Writer' which doesn't have the delete function. If anyone comes on board who particularly needs to be an editor for some reason, they can just give me a shout...:-)
I think that covers all the bases - not too much risk of hiccups, and everyone can carry on contributing what they want how they want when they want - after all, the results of the first couple of days have been pretty staggeringly brilliant...:-)

I would argue that part of the motivation that gets people contributing to a wiki is the 'anyone who wants can give it a go' approach. The Page History feature means that you can always undo any mistakes or mischief and as you increase the number of editors, you increase the number of people who can fix things as well as the number who might break them... and the ratio is almost certainly in favour of the former. Does require a certain amount of faith in human nature but...

As far as I can make out (although I know very little about wikis!) the only thing Editors can do that Writers can't is to rename or delete things. I'm very comfortable with the human nature of SSiWers - just not sure how much difference it makes - but if you think we ought to make everyone Editors, I'm happy to take your advice...:-)

Sorry - to be clear - not sure how much difference the Editors/Writers thing makes...;-)
